This past Spring, Mark M. Whelan asked me if I would be interested in illustrating his children’s book— Just Kidding: A Bedtime Story. I fell in love with the audio version of his book right away and accepted the proposal. My first illustrative work for the project was the cover art, displayed here. Following the cover came three illustrations depicting scenes within the heartfelt and sweet story— a tender narrative about a boy reluctantly chosen by a lost herd of goats, to lead them home. In wanting to keep the illustrations light and childlike as per my discussions with Mark, I began with sketches outlining the goats and the little boy in various poses, then transposing them into final drawings with ink wash and colored pencil. The text accompanying the drawings is taken directly from Mark’s writing. What came of this project are the several illustrations featured here— I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.
