Q & A with Artist Asher Jay: The Maui Dolphin: A Survival Plea for a Sentient Species
55 and Counting by ©Asher Jay 2012, an original work created to raise awareness about the dwindling count of Maui Dolphins in New Zealand’s waters. www.asherjay.com William Trubridge, a World Champion Free Diver, is the ambassador for the smallest and rarest cetacean species, the Cephalorhynchus hectori maui. He is presently spearheading a strong campaign against negligent fishing practices with high by-catch mortality rates. Trawling and gill nets have brought Maui Dolphin numbers from 111 in 2005 to an alarmingly meager population of 55 in 2012. With only 20 females left in the wild, it has become apparent that drastic measures need to be instituted to save this sentient species from…

Translate Landscapes “Dam Nation” Julia Soler
THE IMAGES This two pictures are from the series “dam nation”. It is an on-going project where I try to translate landscapes that I see in my dreams when I’m sleeping into real places. I usually find myself in unknown vast landscapes and I’m usually the only human/animal being around. Water, trees and paths are always very present in my dreams with this certain feeling of mistery, meditation and solitude. Both pictures where taken in Canada. The first one is at Lake Huron. I had never seen such a big lake before. Being born in the Mediterranen sea, this was very impressive, because the lake was so vast, it seemed…

The Cove turns the Empire State Red
The Empire State is a truly magnificent and unique canvas, one that utilizes light and color to convey a narrative. The tradition of illuminating this Art Deco edifice has been an integral part of New York’s skyline since 1964. The building has changed floodlight hues to hallmark holidays, mourn the passing of esteemed personalities, salute home teams, and celebrate or observe other noteworthy occasions, people and events, today this revered Big Apple marker cast a red spotlight on a truly poignant and pertinent film, The Cove. The Cove, a 2009 Academy Award winning documentary directed by Louie Psihoyos features the concentrated efforts of Ric O’Barry to save dolphins from captivity…

Meandering the Limit with Asher Jay
What is the limit? Watching my five year old niece play with my parents’ puppy this seems to be the question on her mind. ‘How many times can I poke him with this stick before he growls at me, or before someone sees and tells me off; what is the extent to which I can pursue my goals?’ As we grow older, the questions return; how far can I run; how high can I climb in this tree; how long can I wait before I go down to dinner…how much money can I make…how long can I live? This question seems lodged so frequently at the back of our brains,…

Petroleum: The Purveyor of Peril
I cannot talk about a tomorrow that has not yet happened, I cannot speak of a past that is not already known, what I can address is today and what remains undone now.
